Mr. Belcher's practice principally focuses in litigation matters involving business torts, ranging from breach of fiduciary duty cases to those involving common law fraud. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in actions arising out of disputes between shareholders or partners, the purchase and sale of securities, mergers and acquisitions, trade secrets, unfair trade practices and ERISA matters.
For example, Mr. Belcher represented a manufacturer of polymer films in an action against a Taiwanese company involving the theft of trade secrets. He was able to obtain a temporary restraining order which led to a favorable resolution of the case. In the securities litigation area, he successfully defended investment bankers in multi-million dollar actions involving diversification of portfolio, option strategies, and blue sky claims. In the securities litigations area, he successfully defended accountants, brokers and investment bankers in multi-million dollar actions involving diversification of portfolio, option strategies, and state and federal securities claims.
Mr. Belcher also frequently represents professionals such as accountants, physicians and realtors in litigation matters affecting their ownership relationships and their businesses. He has successfully assisted partners in several accounting firms to fairly divide their assets, both through cooperative and judicial dissolution. He represented a real estate developer in a contract dispute with a seller which resulted in a $1 million lost profit jury verdict which was sustained on appeal. He handled one of the leading cases in South Carolina involving the fiduciary duties owed by partners in a real estate limited partnership.
